Art is one of the best forms of medicine available in terms of mental health. Often times, when words fail or simply aren’t enough, art can be the way that we are able to speak. Art therapy comes in many forms- painting, drawing, music, dancing, carpentry, etc. Research shows an important correlation between art-based interventions and an increase in well-being and cognition, as well as a decrease in depression and anxiety. Art gives us a safe space to process emotions, heal from trauma, and gives us the option for creativity while expressing our feelings. Art is also a form of mindfulness that allows for meditative states to be enacted while we engage in a creative outlet. This meditative state is often referred to as “flow”, a cognitive state that increases mental pleasure and releases reward focused neurochemicals. In my time working as a medical social worker, I have seen art therapies heal many individuals suffering from issues ranging from chronic pain, to anxiety/depression, to trauma of any kind. I am incredibly honored to have seen this healing in James, the founder of 3rd Eye Art. James found peace and healing through his art, and getting to see his art was one of the highlights of our sessions together. I am so excited to see this company grow and continue to give a safe haven and support to those struggling with mental health.
